Solid Food: When to Start?

Baby food
What I'm going to say here is nothing new to mothers involved with La Leche League or who live a natural, healthy lifestyle. But to most, it'll be news.

Babies do not need to eat baby food.

Gerber started selling jarred baby food in 1928. This tells us that for thousands of years, babies had no processed, overcooked, mushy foods. So then what did they eat? It goes to reason that they ate the same food as the rest of the family. And so this must mean that parents waited to feed their children. They waited until the child could sit up and use their teeth, which means they must be able to sit up and they must have teeth.. which means they were older.

A baby's body, by design, tells us how it should function.

1. The baby's intestines need to mature in order to be selective about what
gets through to his bloodstream such as allergens. This process is complete at
around the age of 7 months.
2. Babies have tongue-thrust reflex that will push food out. This ends at
about the age of 6-7 months.
3. The swallowing technique does not develop until about the age of 6 or 7
months. Prior to this, the food is just moved about randomly in the mouth. Some
will lodge between the cheek and gums and most will come back to the chin and
face. Very little goes to the throat and gets swallowed.
4. Teeth seldom appear before 6 or 7 months. It goes to reason
that if they should be eating at a younger age.. nature would have supplied
teeth at a younger age.

As we can see, the body itself tells us that the child should be a bit older before eating. Otherwise, these mechanisms would "kick in" earlier to accomodate feeding on solids.

Today we looked at when to feed baby. Tomorrow we'll look at what to feed them.
