Even though teething a milestone for your little one, it is several months of irritation for baby and frustration for mom. This can start as early as 2 or 3 months and repeatedly occur through the 3 years it takes for the baby to get all those new teeth.Below is the approximate schedule of teeth appearing. Of course, each child is his/her own person and will develop at his or her own rate. My first child, for instance, had her 4 incisors appear at 10months and got no more teeth at all until she was 21 months old! My second child had is first 4 teeth at 3months of age. Yes, you read that correctly. The rest came "on schedule". So don't panic if your child is faster or slower in getting teeth.. it all works out in the end.
6 to 7 months; Incisors; Two central bottom & Two central top teeth
7 to 9 months; Two more incisors; Top & bottom
10 to 14 months; First molars
15 to 18 months; Canines; “fangs”
2 to 3 years; Second molars
By their third birthday, most children should have all twenty of their primary teeth.
Teething is uncomfortable. Many parents think their baby has teething symptoms, when in fact it may be something else. Here are the most common symptoms:
* Irritability
* Restlessness/difficulty sleeping
* Increased saliva
* Drooling
* Desire to chew on everything
* Swollen, tender gums
If your baby is teething and it is really bothering them, there are things you can do to ease the irritation. Give them something to chew on such as a wooden rattle or spoon. I use to freeze wet washcloths too. A great pain reliever and baby-calmer is Hyland's Teething Tablets
Nothing comes easy, and this includes teeth. Give your baby patience and understanding. Lots of hugs and kisses can go a long way in comforting him. (and you'll be setting a great example of nurturing and sympathy!)
Yes.. hyland's is the BEST. I use the teething tablets, colic tablets, earache tablets.. Nothing is better or safer!
ReplyDeleteSomething that worked for my Okapis was frozen bagels. Not only did it give them the feeling of being a big person (eating just like us), but they could gnaw on the bagel and as it got soft they even got to eat a little bit. Plus, it was a nice distraction from the pain, too.
ReplyDeleteFor us homeopathic chamomila works better than the hylands....
ReplyDeleteTrue that chamomile is great for the calming. But I choose homeopathic over herbal for a few reasons:
ReplyDelete1. It's mixed with the other ingredients for a more synergistic effect.
2. It's a baby and I don't want to take risks. There are risks with certain herbs. I know them but not everyone does so if I recommend something, I'm going to lean toward something I know NEVER has side effects. Chamomile is ragweed. Many people are allergic. I can't risk that responsibility. My son almost died from it because I had no clue he was allergic.
Weleda homeopathic Chamomilla drops work really well. It is easy to give to the infant by putting the drops in a small amount of water, or on a spoon followed by a drink of water. Another benifit of this remedy is that it helps to relieve colicky pain. Note that the drops are for 1 year and over, but a powder form of chamomilla is avaliable for new borns to 1 year.
