In a war on dirt, vaccinologists creating vaccines have come up with a dust mite vaccine. That’s right, they are creating a DNA vaccine to not only neutralize dust mites but also to “modify the immune system” of children. As if modifying the immune system of children by injecting them with 48 doses of 14 viral annd baterial vaccines by age 5 isn’t enough.

A new vaccine may mean the end to the suffering of millions of dust mite allergy sufferers, results released today suggest.

The results of a small study from Swiss vaccine developers Cytos suggests that their new DNA-based vaccine is extremely effective in reducing sensitivity to dust mites and the symptoms they cause.

Participants in the study who suffered from a dust mite allergy were found to be over 100 times less sensitive to dust mites after being vaccinated, with symptoms reduced by a third.

Some 17 of the 19 participants were found to suffer no allergic reaction in the presence of dust mites, and resulting asthma attacks were completely eliminated.

Dr Wolfgang Renner, chief executive of Cytos, said he was impressed with the success of the trials.

“Patients experienced a significant and lasting improvement, suggesting that the treatment effectively modified the underlying cause of the disease,” he said.

The Cytos vaccine differs from the treatments currently available, as it contains DNA designed to modify the immune system, encouraging it to suppress the allergic reaction, while most allergy treatments on the market only suppress symptoms temporarily.

Dust mites are a major cause of allergic reactions in the UK, as their excrement contains substances that irritate the respiratory system, causing sneezing, sore eyes and asthma.

The tiny mites inhabit carpets, bed clothes and other soft furnishings in the home, feeding on flakes of human skin shed naturally as the skin continually regenerates itself.
